Booker Shortlist 2022 – Glory
Will this be showered in Glory?
BookWorm: Why it Could Win: Possible my least favourite so the judges will love it.
Why it Might Not Win: It is long winded, it was a drag to read, very repetitive and tried too hard to make the animals human which didn’t work for me.
Tracy: Why it Could Win: It’s a satirical look at politics in an unnamed African country- it is timely and can be scathing. Plus, it called a certain former president a tweeting baboon.
Why it Might Not Win: For the same reasons it could- it may be too controversial, and the anthropomorphization of the characters may be off putting. Except for the baboon.
Nicole: Why it Could Win: The satire and the author could give it the edge.
Why it Might Not Win: Animal Farm redux?
Anita: Why it Could Win: It did the best job of shining a spotlight on a topical issue while incorporating truly emotional and dramatic moments.
Why it Might Not Win: The first third forgot the importance of storytelling.
Lisa: Why it Could Win: It’s a modern allegory connected to recent history in Zimbabwe, with big themes about government and power. It’s written with unique style.
Why it Might Not Win: I thought it bogged down and I found it hard to get through.
