Booker International Shortlist 2022 – Heaven

Will this one make it to Booker Prize Heaven?

Tracy’s Thoughts:

Why it could win: Most of have been bullied at some point in our lives, and to have an ally is priceless. This book’s slice of childhood is expertly done.

Why it might not win: PTSD from that time in life. Kawakami could have fleshed the story out even more, though the minimalist style is lovely.

Rachel’s Thoughts: Bleak, bleak, bleak…

Why it could win: Dark, powerful and intense enough to make you want to look away. An exploration of the ‘why’ of bullying and responses to it, rather than just a story about bullying.

Why it might not win: I would question whether this is different enough to take the prize.

BookWorm’s Thoughts:

Why it could win: This one is bleak enough for Booker

Why it might not win: The ending seems to offer some hope that things will get better.

What do you think winner or loser?
