MBI 2019 Our Short List Predictions

booker

Tomorrow the Man Booker International 2019 short list will be announced, as a group we have managed to read all the long list books so which books do we think will make the short list?

Based on our highly scientific rating system the books predicted to make the short list are:

Love in the New Millennium 18/20
The Remainder 17.3/20
Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead 16.5/20
The Faculty of Dreams 14.5/20
Mouthful of Birds 14.5/20
Celestial Bodies 14/20 or Four Soldiers 14/20

Tracy’s Predictions:

Love in the New Millennium
The Remainder
Shape of the Ruins
The Faculty Of Dreams
Mouthful of Birds
At Dusk (just because I really disliked it)

I’d love to see The Years on the shortlist, but I don’t think it will be, since it’s sort of not fiction.

Book Worm’s Predictions:

Shape of the Ruins (longest book on the longlist and I loved it)
Love in the New Millennium (haven’t read this one but think it will make it)
The Remainder (one of my favourites, unusual and quirky)
The Pine Islands (intriguing and quirky)
The Years (anything about women is topical right now)
The Death of Murat Idrissi (women and culture clashes)

I would like to see Drive your Plow make it but I think as the author won last year they won’t put this one forward.

Emily’s Predictions:  It’s hard for me to predict the shortlist this year. I feel I’ve not read as many of the books as normal and several of the ones I’ve read that took me days and days to read I don’t see on the shortlist. So here’s a combination list of the best ones I’ve read and the ones that I wish I’d read instead of some of the ones that I did, but I truly feel like anything could happen. The two I’m really rooting for are Drive Your Plough and The Remainder.

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead
The Remainder
The Faculty Of Dreams
Mouthful of Birds
The Years
Celestial Bodies

Which books do you predict will make the short list?

  1. I got 5/6!
I understand your point that The Years is not fiction (I was strong on that in my review, (https://wordsandpeace.com/2019/03/29/book-review-the-years/) but they put it on the longlist, so it means the judges do consider it as eligible, and it could win.
