Booker International Shortlist 2021 – At Night all Blood is Black
Will this be the one on the night?
BookWorm’s Thoughts:
Why This Could Win: While this is not an easy read it is definitely thought provoking and for me at least it was a totally different “war” story. There is a lot going on in this short book including the idea of family, the peace you can grant an enemy but not a friend and of course the idea of madness and its role in a war setting. While I can’t say I enjoyed the read I appreciated the rhythmic way the story was told.
Why It Might not Win: Too short perhaps or too grim.
Tracy’s Thoughts:
Why it could win: Though it is set in WWI, the topics are timeless- mental health, racism, guilt. And it is so well written and translated.
Why it might not win: there are no fluffy animals and rainbows in this book- this is a HARD read.
Rachel’s Thoughts: Although a very difficult read, I would understand if this won.
Why it could win: It’s a powerful portrayal of the effects of war and colonialism on a young soldier during WWII. A strong, uncomfortable story, well-told, with a unique voice.
Why it might not win: I wonder if it’s too traditional?
