Booker International Shortlist 2021 – The Employees

75. Olga Ravn - The Employees new

Will it work out for this one?

BookWorm  I have admitted defeat I can’t get hold of this one so I am going in based on what other people think.

Why This Could Win: It sounds great and I really want to read it,

Why It Might Not Win: Sci-fi when the judges seem to be leaning toward non-fcition

Tracy’s Thoughts:

Why it could win: The sci-fi elements, the symbolism, and the exploration of what self means. It is very resonant of the pandemic.

Why it might not: Many people will be turned off by the outer space setting and the dystopian feel.

Rachel’s thoughts: Of the books I’ve read so far, this is the one I’ve enjoyed the most.

Why it could win: What makes us human? What does success look like? Thought-provoking and original, and I loved the way the story builds through disparate reports.

Why it might not win: I felt this stood out as quite different to the others on the list. Whether that makes it a winner or an outlier, I’m just not sure.

I found a copy at the Book Depository. There seems to be nothing available in the U.S., and it wasn’t available at either library I use. Maybe in time.
