Read Around the World with us

world

Those of you who have been following our blog for a while are probably familiar with our Read Around the World posts when we pick a book from different countries around the world. We thought we’d mix things up a little and make it into an interactive activity for all of you to join in.

We want you to travel the world with us. For the next year (starting May 1), we’ll be visiting a new country each month and will be posting our usual Read Around the World post.  We’re inviting you all to join us in reading one (or more if you are ambitious) book each month that fit specific countries.

Toward the end of the month we’ll post our Read Around the World  feature on the blog with mini reviews of each of our books, fun facts about the country, and additional recommendations for literature from that country. Occasionally we’ll have guest bloggers write  posts. You can participate by commenting on the book you read and posting your own reviews on your blogs (or goodreads, Litsy, etc.) at any time during the month. You can challenge yourself to read one book each month for the year, or you can pick which months/countries you want to read over the year.

Bloggers and readers, you can get creative and really immerse yourself in the experience by going the extra step to make a typical meal/drink from that country. If you’re on Instagram or Litsy, post photos of the various ways in which you might immerse yourself in a given country and book. Just make sure to tag us (JenP on Litsy, readers_room on Instagram) or link to us back to us if you post these reviews on your blog (I’ll post a introduction for the country/location at the beginning of each month that you can link back to).

Book Worm and I will each pick 3 countries. If you are interested in participating, let us know which countries you’d like to visit and we will randomly select 6 more countries from the list of nominees. On May 1, I will post a list of the final 12 countries along with the calendar for when we will be reading for each country.

So, who will join us? If you plan to join in, nominate a country you’d like to “visit” by posting it in the comment section of this blog.

  6. Just to clarify – are you looking at books set in a particular country or by an author from that country? Reason I ask is that I’m well underway with my own round the world tour but a book only counts if the author is from the country. I’ve completed 35 countries from my target of 50 so far https://bookertalk.com/world-literature/world-literature-reading-list/

    • Individual readers can interest however they like. Not really strict rules since it’s more about broadening your own reading than competing with others. For me personally, I would only count it if the author is from the country but others might do something different. We’ve been doing the read around the world feature for two years and we only pick books from that county to highlight (author and setting have to be from the country).

      • thanks Jen for the clarification. I will likely participate from time to time. I’ve learned that I’m not much use when it comes to sticking to reading plans 🙂

  7. I will definitely participate! I’m interested in many countries, but will start with Spain since I’m planning a trip there. Also something South American – Chile or Argentina?

    • So we will post a list of 12 countries we will all be interested adding together but you are always welcome to add countries to that or do your own thing too. Did you want to nominate Spain? I will add it to the randomizer and will post final list Monday.

  8. I’ll try to join in if I have extra time after my other monthly challenges and I have something on the tbr that fits! I know May 1 is only a couple of days away, but I’ll think about a country I might want to nominate. If I come up with something, I’ll come back tonight or tomorrow.
