Chutes and Ladders: Game Board!

A few weeks ago we announced our winter reading challenge. Today, we post a final reminder along with our official game board. Keep reading to check it out and read more about the challenge.

You can read about the challenge on our main challenge page. If you want to join, send me an email with a list of 25 TBR books (thereadersroomblog@gmail.com) and a photo you want to use for your game piece by December 10th. Below you’ll see our official game board, but without the images of the ladders and/or chutes (which will be added soon).

Exact placement of TBR numbers or book categories was determined using random.org. All book categories/tags were nominated by our challenge participants. Some of you were kind to your fellow readers while others submitted some really tricky categories.

The game will start Monday December 12. For the next 14 mondays, we will roll the dice for all eligible participants. Landing on a TBR square means you will need to read that specific number on your TBR list to move on. Landing on a category/tag square means you’ll have to read a book that fits the category in order to move on. Once you finish a book and post a mini review (or link to your blog post/good reads review), you’ll be eligible for the next dice roll. If you don’t finish a book in time, you can pass and wait until the following week (or whenever you are ready).

Once the dice roll occurs (and you are eligible to move that week) your piece will automatically move to that square. In order to move onto the next square you must complete your book and post the mini review on the challenge page (in the comments section under your list).

While the top prize will go to the person who has reached the end (or the furthest by end of game), there are good prizes located on hidden squares (some even located toward the beginning of the board). Those hidden prizes will be revealed when the game closes so if your piece is on a hidden prize square at the end of the game, you’ll win that prize. Expect cool bookish prizes to be announced in a few weeks. Top prize will be worth over $100 in cool bookish products.

We want to hear from you! What do you think of the categories? Participants: are there any squares that you are dreading or longing to land on? Which ones?

Somehow, I don’t think I have ever played Chutes and Ladders—but the game board looks really fun! And almost all the categories are ones I’ll be happy to read; there are only two or three I’ll hope to skip. 🙂

    • I have to say that you all came up with such good categories that I may have to join in and play unofficially.

I love these categories! I think I even have a book on my shelf for almost all of them, except maybe cozy mystery. But those are plentiful at the library. Can’t wait to get started!

  3. I think landscape as character is my favorite category. I’ll have to resist the urge to use my TBR books to fulfill some of those categories.

I think some of them are going to have me searching far and wide in order to find a book in that category (Latin American, Scottish, Japanese… Pretty much all of the ones set in a specific place or with a specific type of author). There are one or two I would like to skip over completely, but I think it’s going to be fun.

  7. Thanks for adding my TBR list. Please can you get rid of the extra ‘l’ you’ve added to my name? it’s spelled the Scottish way : one ‘l’. Many thanks!

  8. Did I miss something or is the first roll of the dice delayed because we never got our lists to you in time?

    • Just for future reference, all dice roll results will be updated on the challenge page not by individual blog post since I didn’t want to inundate non-participants with game updates. You can find the challenge page in the menu bar “challenges.” The photo shows the most updated positions on the board and then scroll down to see your individual dice roll.

    • I’m confused. Are you a different Cindy than the one playing? If you want to join in, just send me a list of 25 TBR books and a photo for your game token and I’ll add you to the game

    • Ooh, I just realized who you are. I didn’t know your name was Cindy. Never fear, you will be able to catch up since people will be going down chutes soon. You’ll find the results of the dice roll on this page every Monday. Good luck
