Winter Reading Challenge

chutes-and-ladders

It’s time to officially announce our next reading challenge! Keep reading to see what were are planning and to sign up.

This winter we’ll be hosting a chutes and ladders reading challenge. Readers will compete with each other as they read their way through our chutes and ladders board (we will be posting our own version of a chutes and ladders board). The challenge will run from December 12 to March 17th. Official rules, instructions on how to play, and the official game board will be posted on December 1st.

Generally, the goal of the game is to be the first reader to reach the end of the board (0r the person at the furtherest point when the game ends). Each player will advance through the board by reading books and rolling the dice (technically, we will roll for you). We will roll the dice every monday so players who have completed their book each week may advance to the next book by rolling the dice. If players haven’t finished their book by the monday of the dice roll, they can pass and wait until the following monday to mover forward.

The grand prize will be awarded to the person who makes it to the end first but several other prizes will also be awarded.

Here’s what we need from you:

  1. Sign up here to play by adding a comment saying you want to join us.
  2. Submit a list of 25 books from your TBR. Books must be at least 100 pages. We recommend picking books you think you’ll be able to read in one week, however, you do NOT need to read one book a week to be successful at the challenge.
  3. Submit a second list of 5 book tags or categories (e.g. 18th century book, books by woman writers, middle grade book). You can be as creative and specific or general as possible. We recommend that you pick categories that are general enough for people to find multiple book options but that also aren’t so general that it’s too easy).
  4. Submit a photo of yourself or an Avatar you want to use as your game token.

You may submit all lists and photo in one email directly to me (Jen) at thereadersroomblog@gmail.com

Once you have submitted those things, you can sit back and wait for the official start of the game. When the game starts, you must check in at least once a week because we will be rolling the die on the same day every week.

Sounds fun! I got bogged down with last year’s and haven’t quite finished, although I’m still hoping to. But it’ll be good to be able to start this one at the beginning instead of coming in a month late. đŸ™‚

    • Hi! Just a friendly reminder for you to send me your TBR list, the 5 bookish categories/tags, and your image for the game piece. You technically have until December 11 for the TBR and photo but if you want your book categories to appear on the board, I’ll need those in the next few days.

  10. I won’t be able to rad as fast as some people so a book a week is going to be hard going. But he’ll let’s give it a try. For the list of books do we have to put them into the categories?

    • So we’ll be “rolling the dice” once a week but people don’t have to read a new book each week. You can simply pass and wait for the next roll the following week. there will be prizes hidden on certain squares so you don’t have to be the fastest reader to win a prize.

And for your list of books – no need to put those into categories. Some squares will be book categories and other squares will be a certain book number on your TBR list based on the order you submitted to me.

  13. I’ll give this a go – I need to get more off my TBR because I keep adding to it. I’ll get my lists and photo to you soon.

And we had that same snakes and ladders board in our compendium of games when I was a child. It gave me a warm glow, seeing it again!

    • I’m working on my TBR list. Can I confirm that we will have no additional time to get our hands on the books? That is, once we know the book, we have one week from that moment? No extra time built in to get the book if we don’t own it? I’m assuming that to be the case, but I wanted to confirm. Thanks!

      • You have as much time as you need. I will roll the dice every Monday until the end of the game so people are not required to read a book every week. That said, you will only be eligible to roll once you have finished and reviewed a book. I’m sure many people will be skipping a roll or two. It is probably better if you do have the books on hand or within easy reach if you want to move quickly but it is not essential
