Books to Movies in 2015

Before we became parents, my husband and I used to go to see movies every weekend. Now I mostly binge watch netflix episodes of Orange is the New Black. This year quite a few movie adaptations of books are coming out. Here are 10 book to movies coming out in 2015, ranked by order in which I’d like to see them (most to least appealing).

1. Far from the Madding Crowd by Hardy: I love Hardy. I rediscovered his writing relatively recently, having tried unsuccessfully to read his books when I in high school. When I rediscovered his books last year, I started slowly trying to make my way through them little by little. I haven’t read this one, but it is one I plan to read soon. Here’s the trailer.

2. The Martian by Andy Weir: Everyone is raving about this book and I like Matt Damon so it’s a win-win for me. The movie will be directed by Ridley Scott and is scheduled for a November 2015 release date. Will I see the movie or read the book first is the question?

3. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins: I enjoyed the Hunger Games Trilogy although admittedly the third book was my least favorite. If I can only find time to see part 1, then I’ll catch this one.

4. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley: A 1001 book and yet another movie adaptation. This one stars Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy and is scheduled for October 2015 release date. It looks much better than the Aaron Eckart one that drew laughter in from the audience when the trailer played in the theater.

5. Madame Bovary by Flaubert: A 1001 book. I did find the book fairly slow moving but ultimately enjoyed it. Here’s the trailer.

6. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs: I didn’t love the book but I think it could make for a ccreepy movie especially since Tim Burton is the director. Okay, so technically this is cheating because it was originally scheduled for 2015 and now is pushed back to early 2016.

7. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith. There’s probably something wrong with me because I love zombie movies and t.v. (walking dead is one of my favorite shows). I also love Jane Austin. This is one where I will likely skip the book but see the movie. I am fully aware that the movie will probably be terrible

8. Insurgent by Veronica Roth: So while I like to claim that I only like literary fiction, I’ve read all books in this series. I realize the first movie was terrible but this is exactly the kind of movie I like to watch in secret when my husband has one of his boys nights out — that way I can still pretend I only watch high-brow movies :). 9. The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks. Sparks has to be the cheesiest author in the world. I actually read this book. The movie looks just as bad as the book See the trailer here if you must. This will be a definitely no for me.

10. Fifty Shades of Grey. No! Just no! I had no interest in reading the book and even less in seeing the movie.
